Evolution of Trust: A New Era of Fiduciary Leadership from Japan
As the world faces structural transformation and rising uncertainty, the fundamental assumptions of asset management are being reshaped. Geopolitical fragmentation, the global shift toward inflationary conditions—including Japan—changes in the interest rate environment, and ongoing reforms in regulatory and governance frameworks are contributing to this shift. Amid these interconnected and multifaceted changes, Japanese asset owners are re-examining the nature of their fiduciary responsibilities and beginning to reconstruct their decision-making and implementation frameworks.
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the Global Fiduciary Symposium. The symposium will explore, from multiple perspectives, the core challenges facing Japanese fiduciaries—from the macroeconomic environment and regulatory frameworks to asset-liability management (ALM), portfolio construction, and ultimately, outcomes for beneficiaries.

2026 Conference Overview
This forum brings together leading global asset managers and major Japanese asset owners to engage in practical, experience-driven dialogue. Building on the trusted relationships cultivated over two decades, this year’s discussions will focus on the following key themes.
Macroeconomic Environment and Structural Shifts
Japan’s economy is transitioning from a prolonged period of deflation to a phase of moderate, sustained inflation. At the same time, the global landscape is undergoing significant change, driven by geopolitical fragmentation and the reconfiguration of supply chains. This session will examine how these structural shifts are likely to impact asset allocation and long-term investment strategies.
Evolution of Regulatory, Policy, and Governance Frameworks
Japan’s institutional landscape surrounding asset owners and pension plans is entering a new phase, marked by the implementation of the Asset Owner Principles, reforms to retirement benefit systems, and increasing disclosure requirements for pension plans. This session will explore the practical challenges and responses in an environment where demands for transparency and accountability continue to intensify.
ALM and Asset Allocation in an Era of Inflation and Rising Interest Rates
Changes in the inflation and interest rate environment are significantly reshaping the underlying assumptions of pension asset management in Japan. This session will address key considerations for redesigning asset allocation, including benefit design, the reconstruction of asset-liability management (ALM) frameworks aligned with liabilities, the evolving role of domestic bonds, and the cost of currency hedging.
Evolving Investment Approaches and Their Implementation
The range of investment approaches available to fiduciaries is rapidly expanding and evolving, including private assets, transition investing, and the use of AI and data analytics. This session will explore how these emerging approaches can be effectively implemented, focusing on their potential to enhance long-term returns as well as the associated risks. It will also examine key considerations such as liquidity constraints, governance frameworks, and execution capabilities.
Building an Investment Framework for the Benefit of Beneficiaries
For asset owners and pension plans facing constraints in talent and resources, establishing a sustainable investment framework is a critical challenge. This session will explore how to design an optimal operating model that serves beneficiaries’ best interests, including the effective use of outsourcing and knowledge transfer.
